    A favorite strategy of ours is to steal a sliver of space at the top of the stairs for a mini library. It's just 5' wide but borrows space from the stairwell to feel larger.

    We kept the existing HVAC for the 1st floor, which was fairly new, but were able to upgrade to heat pumps to heat and cool the 2nd floor, and to heat pump hot water.
